In late 1999, I decided to write down the personal values by which I choose to lead my life. By identifying the values that were important to me, I not only set a path for my future, but also gained a new understanding of the choices that had led me to be who I am.
At the turn of the century, I published the Millennium Prayer as a statement of my intention. Of course we are not perfect, and at times I have strayed from my goals. However, this prayer continues to be a statement of my chosen path.
The Millennium Prayer
Universal energy, of which I am part, I pledge to create a world of peace and joy.
I am tolerant of the values and beliefs of others, and feel love and respect for all living creatures.
I accept that others worship their god in their own way.
I practice kindness, compassion, sincerity and honesty.
I help others when I can, through sharing, healing or charity.
I place myself neither above nor below any other being.
I listen to and understand what others are trying to say.
I learn from the elders and teach the youth.
I learn from the youth and teach the elders.
I recognize that I have something to learn from everyone and everything on the planet.
I care for my body, the temple of my existence.
I eat nutritional foods, exercise regularly, and maintain awareness of my physical state.
I care for my emotional state and enjoy peace of mind.
I fast regularly, for both physical and spiritual cleansing.
I meditate and increase my capabilities as a human.
I do not let my desires overcome my values.
I cherish my planet as a living entity.
I focus my efforts on healing the earth and its inhabitants.
I put great consideration into the creation of life.
I harm no one, either through intention or lack of action.
I control my anger and do not display it to others.
I find constructive ways to release energy.
I practice non-violence.
I will not carry a weapon.
I continuously seek learning, becoming well-educated, well-informed and inquisitive.
I am an explorer, a traveler and a creator.
I am optimistic, grateful and philosophical
I am enthusiastic, productive and adventurous.
I am moral, ethical and live life with integrity.
I am open to the guidance of synchronicity and do not let expectations hinder my path.
I find hope in the darkest of days and focus in the brightest.
I do not judge the universe.

I enjoy your article and the prayer says it all. I don’t always forgive, nor love everyone – something I am working on. But, all growth and spiritual work is an evolving of self.
